Description & Provenance

Copper and silver are two famous native metals that can found all around the world. Both have been integral to the development of mankind for millennia and have consistently held an inherent value, urging men to mine for them anywhere they might be found. However, one would be considered lucky to recover either species at any significant size or with any notable crystal definition. Well-crystallized specimens suitable for a fine mineral collection are few and far between. For this reason, examples with discernible crystals are extremely collectible and highly sought-after by collectors. The Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the few localities in the world known for producing spectacularly crystallized copper and silver specimens, of which this is certainly one. This impressive example boasts a curvaceous and sculptural S-formation that is absolutely eye-catching. Upon closer inspection, one can see that the piece is abound with dozens of sharp crystals of both copper and silver. They have intergrown with one another in such a way that allows us to savor their individual morphology. Areas of negative space further enhance the distinctness of the crystal forms. Tiny, branching clusters of crystallized silver add a gorgeous, textural contrast and heighten the intricate composition and organic aesthetics of the piece. A smoky patina has formed across the specimen, adding depth and richness. This specimen would make a valuable addition to any fine mineral collection as a rare and exceptional example of two crystallized native metals, marked by size, quality, condition, and a dramatic composition.
