The town of Baia Mare has a long history of mining that dates back to the Middle Ages. It is home to several polymetallic veins that were mined for centuries, including the Herja Mine. Although primarily a producer of ore, it’s famous among collectors for fine mineral specimens of different varieties. In 2005, the entire network of mines was permanently closed, left to be reclaimed by nature. This paved the way for a second era of mineralization and different types of specimens to occur. Although some specimens have been recovered from this “second wave,” those recovered from the first era are considered classics. This attractive specimen is one of those classics from the original era of mining. It’s composed of dozens of closely clustered stibnite crystals. With their sharp forms, gunmetal coloring, and intense metallic sheen, they are incredibly dramatic and very attractive. The crystals resemble flattened nails and have formed in an exceptionally orderly spray. They are accentuated by a matrix covered in lustrous, blue-grey quartz crystals that add an element of contrast of both form and color. With its rich combination of shapes, colors, and textures, this multi-generational specimen is a wonderful example from the historic deposit.
