Description & Provenance

Amethyst is among the most prolific minerals on earth; despite its plentitude, there are only a handful of localities known for their fine-caliber specimens, each with its own distinct, signature aesthetics. Artigas, Uruguay is among those producers of unique amethyst. The best Artigas examples are replete with lustrous crystals of the darkest and richest hues of purple. Although occasional rivals for color saturation exist, crystal habit tends to vary so greatly by locality, specimens from Uruguay are almost instantly recognizable—the region is known for very dense clusters of small, short crystals. This stunning specimen is an excellent and sizable example from this famous locale. It exhibits the extraordinarily saturated, rich, grape-purple hue for which Uruguay is loved. It is incredibly lustrous, thanks to well-defined crystals with smooth, glassy faces, and sharp terminations. The crystals are of a similar size and densely packed together, resulting in a big visual impact—a specimen that shimmers with a dark brilliance. Although many examples from Uruguay have lustrous, sharp crystals, this specimen is exceptional in that it also boasts an incredibly sculptural form that shows off nature’s unbelievable propensity for creating natural works of art. The combination of its size, pristine quality, and condition is a remarkable feat and its artistic form propels its presence. Notably, this specimen is entirely crystalized on all sides, it benefits from a 360° viewing capability, making it a natural showpiece that can be placed anywhere.
